Write the WORD - Ephesians 3:14-21 - Scripture Art Tutorial

Write the WORD.

This is what we are calling my parish's awesome Scripture writing project.

The parishioners of St Monica's Catholic Church, North Parramatta, are handwriting the entire New Testament.

Read that again. The. Entire. New. Testament!

Each in his/her own language.

My latest assignment for this project is Ephesians 3:14-21

Want to create a piece of Scripture art like this, but not sure where to start?

There's nothing wrong with 'Scraplifting'

Pinterest exists for a reason! And that reason is inspiration.

When you really need to spend some time in creative prayer but have lost your mojo - have a browse through a site like Pinterest (or even Google images) and see what others before you have created. You don't even need to search the verse that you want to art. You'll find far less cliched ideas if you search for themes, ideas or even feelings!

How to search for ideas.....

I always find that using the term "art journal" rather than "Bible journaling" will give you a wealth of creative inspiration. Searching "Bible journaling" will bring up all *those* pages - the ones I often roll my eyes at (with all the love in the world - LOL but not lol). But if you want ART ideas rather than ways to stick Disney stickers on a Bible page (again, with all the love in the world!!), then search for "art journal" or "Bible art."

Of course if you have a specific Scripture verse and want to see what others have done, that is also a great option.

Guilty as charged

My page today was Pinterest inspired. Unfortunately it was one of those Pinterest posts that has no information or artist name, so I can't give credit for the idea (because if you know me, you know I always give credit!)

But don't just copy!

If you are a beginner at Bible art, then you may want to simply copy ideas that you find online. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that! I have a whole bunch of what I call Blatant Plagiarism Pages from my early Bible arting days. But as you spend more time in creative prayer, you will find that making it your own is so important. When we make the art personal, then it becomes about us rather than about a random picture on the internet.

My suggestion is this - if you see an idea that you love - look at it. Take note (mentally) of what you like about it, what techniques were used, what you REALLY want to include on your page. Then switch off your device. Don't save the page or screenshot it. Get rid of it altogether. THEN create YOUR art. From memory. I often do this, with days or even weeks between my viewing an idea and actually creating a page. The result is often that when I find the original inspiration again, my page is totally different. And that's what we're going for.

Tutorials are great!

Of course you may find a page idea that you love and want to create a page just like it. That's when tutorials are great as they take you through the process step by step. But remember - you DON'T have to do it exactly like the tutorial says. Changing colours, words, even materials is a great way to personalise a page AND use what you have rather than spend a heap of money on *stuff* you may never use again.

Let's art Ephesians!

I'd love to see what you create! If sharing your page to your media channels, please tag @GeorgiasBible so I can see them too!
